We Are A People Under Siege From Virtually Every Corner
Written August 11, 2020

We Welcome Your Letters

  • The Lincoln Herald welcomes correspondence from our readers about current news issues or shout outs about someone’s accomplishment in their community or school. All letters submitted must have the writer’s real name, phone number and address (we will not publish the address or phone number). Some letters may not be published if they contain any personal issues, bad language, etc. If you would like to be considered for a guest column just let us know and we can give you all the details. We look forward to hearing from our readers!

I sincerely hope that this letter gets printed. I work in one of the very few businesses in Lincoln County that has remained open to the general public without major disruption. There were fears and rumors that we would have to reduce hours of operations or lay off staff like so many other retailers. Fortunately, that did not come to pass.

What has come to pass though is the demasking of people and their true self(s). The election cycle, the pandemic, the economy and just the overall feeling that we are a people under siege from virtually every corner has changed all of us. Some of it is not for the good.

Take the mask debate, the health mandate that a mask be worn in places of business like where I work. Do I believe it is for the public good, yes. Do I enforce the mandate and company rules requiring mask use, NO. Why?, because the debate has morphed into a question of which is the greatest danger to my physical person - the pandemic or the anti-masker?.

We also need to look at the economic situation here in Lincolnton on a more personal level. I have been blessed with a good and loving wife, a roof over my head and food on the table. But, so many in our community do not have or are losing that basic human need. The safety net and the security it brings has begun to crumble. Everyday, through my window of the working world I can see first hand the effects of an ever increasing population of homeless and near homeless wandering the streets. Some of these wanders are local, and some are being transplanted from other areas. Regardless, they are our problem, but what do we do? What can we do? Big question.

Another big concern of mine personally is law enforcement. I support our law enforcement officers in this community. On that I could care less if you agree or disagree. We have a fine line of blue (state, county and city) that put themselves out there everyday for all of us. We may not always agree or even understand the reasons they do the things they do. But I do know from first-hand experience they hold themselves to a higher degree of accountability. It breaks my heart when an officer admits they are hungry, but afraid to patronize certain establishments because of what might happen to their order. Officers are welcome any time of day or night to our business and even my home to use the restroom, have a snack or call their loved one to make sure they are alright.

Bottom line in any of this is people are afraid! It does not matter the brand of politic’s, these fearful people are our neighbors. Do we lock ourselves up and hide, or do we roll up our collective sleeves and get to work as a community to help our neighbors and relieve these fear’s.

Amen! As a local business owner I would be proud to have any emergency worker in my business. I am proud of what they do. The whole era has changed so rapidly you feel intimidated to speak what you think. But in my business you can speak freely and many do . The many problems that plague this community.Recently the city electric department sent out what I thought was and intimidating leter to folks that were behind on their power bill because they lost their job no fault of their own. Make arrangements or get cut off .Folks we used to be better than this. Letís put our heads together public private venture and take this burden off these folks. For goodness sake letís see some leadership, quit worrying about a mural on a wall when there are so many other things that need to be done. I would also like to add a message to the mayor of LIncolnton I appreciate the fact you addressed my email through your comments in the newspaper,
