LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Before last night’s Lincolnton City Council meeting, two new faces were sworn in. New Mayor Ed Hatley and new City Council Member Roby Jetton were sworn in by City Clerk Donna Flowers accompanied by their families.
Mayor Ed Hatley replaces former Mayor John Gilleland, who chose not to run for the office for a fourth time. Councilman Roby Jetton defeated longtime Councilman Larry Mac Hovis in a close election for the Ward IV seat. Incumbent City Councilman, Dr. Les Cloninger was also sworn in to continue representing Ward II.
Gilleland and Hovis were honored for their service, receiving plaques and rocking chairs from the City.
Gilleland commented that he “was leaving the City in good hands. Even though I won’t be serving on the City Council I will help in any way that I can. I want to thank all of you for the opportunity I had to serve.”
Hovis noted his service to the City. “I’ve been on the City Council for twenty years, and I feel guilty for getting this honor. I had an easy job. The City manager and all the City’s employees make the City Council’s job very easy. I can’t give enough credit to the City employees, and I want to thank the citizens for the honor of serving.”
