Post Offices to Stay Open--For Now

Wayne Howard
Reporter

Approximately 125 area residents attended meetings held in front of three smaller post offices on Wednesday (Jan. 9), and most seemed pleased to learn that their local facilities would not be closing--at least not right now.

Ellen Hebert, Postmaster from Salisbury, addressed the gatherings and told those in attendance at all three locations that for now, their local post offices would remain open although hours will be cut.

The largest gathering was at Crouse, where about 60 people showed up for an early afternoon meeting. In Alexis, the crowd numbered about 40. At High Shoals, there were only about 25 people on hand.

At Crouse, 289 people had returned surveys distributed via mail to 1268 people with Crouse addresses. Of those, 253--or 88% favored reducing hours to three alternatives, two of which would have closed the local post office and the other which would change the post office to a privately owned contract facility. The new hours at Crouse will be from 9:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Crouse will also continue to have window service on Saturdays from 8 to noon. Previously, the Crouse post office had opened at 7:30 Monday through Friday and had a long lunch break. Now Postmaster Kim Johnson's lunch break will only be for 30 minutes from noon until 12:30.

At HIgh Shoals, 96 of the surveys were returned out of 299 mailed out. 79 of those responding--or 82% favored cutting hours to the alternatives. High Shoals' new hours will be from 9:45 to 4:15 Monday through Friday with a 30-minute lunch break from 12:30 to one o'clock. Mail will still be put in boxes on Saturday, but there will be no window service.

At Alexis, 242 of the 633 surveys sent out were returned. 226 of those, or 93%, asked for the post office there to remain open with reduced hours. At Alexis, the post office will open at 9:30 and close at four o'clock Monday through Friday with a 30-minute lunch break from noon to 12:30. Alexis will have no window service on Saturday but incoming mail will be put in boxes.

Hebert said the Postal Service is trying to give customers as much service as possible, but with post offices losing money every day, expenses must be reduced.
