The November General Election is now less than a month away. Early (One-Stop) Voting begins next Wednesday October 17th.
Many of the races have essentially already been decided. In Lincoln County, two GOP candidates for County Commissioner have no opposition. Neither does the Register of Deeds, the District Attorney, one of the candidates for School Board and the Mayor of Lincolnton.
Those who would like to know more about the candidates in this November's election can learn more at Candidate Forums, two of which are scheduled for this Thursday evening. The East Lincoln Betterment Association will hold a Candidates Forum for the candidates for Sheriff, Clerk of Court and Board of Education at 6:30 at the East Lincoln Community Center on Optimist Club Road in Denver. In Gaston County a Candidates Forum is scheduled for 6 PM in the auditorium at Gaston Day School. Cleveland and Catawba counties have already had Candidate Forums. The Catawba County Forum was held last Tuesday (Oct. 2nd). It was recorded by Chad Medford's Video Service and is available for viewing on the Catawba County Farm Bureau's Facebook page.
The Lincoln Herald will join the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce in presenting a Candidates Forum Tuesday evening (Oct. 16th) at 6:30 at the Lincoln Cultural Center. All of the candidates in local and area races who have opponents on the ballot have been invited to participate.
In addition to the candidate races, six proposed NC Constitutional Amendments will be on the ballot. Gaston County voters will also decide whether or not to allow county-wide ABC sales. Currently, all Gaston County municipalities except High Shoals have beer and wine sales. Convenience groceries in areas outside those towns say they are losing business because people who drive to the towns to get beer and wine also end up buying their gas and other needs while there. While the legal possibility of a County ABC store will be included on the ballot (required by law), Gaston Commissioners say they have no intention of opening one. The only real change (if approved by voters) would be allowing beer & wine sales at stores outside of the towns.
Before the Election, the Lincoln Herald will be publishing information on Early Voting sites and times for Lincoln, Gaston, Catawba and Cleveland counties and sample ballots. The only difference in the ballot for those outside the city of Lincolnton is that it will not include the City races (Mayor and Council members).
