Cancellations, Postponements, Other COVID-19 News
UPDATE: Schools will be closed for two weeks.

It is not our intention to be alarmists, but President Donald Trump declared the COVID-19 virus a national emergency on Friday (March 13th).  Surely by now everyone knows about the steps you can and should be taking to try to avoid spreading the disease.  Here are the latest postponements and cancellations due to COVID-19 that we have received:

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper held a news conference Saturday afternoon (March 14th) and issued an executive order that schools be closed for two weeks beginning Monday (March 16th).  The Governor's order also bans all gatherings of more than 100 people.  [see separate Lincoln Herald article.]

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) had already postponed the 2020 high school basketball state championships indefinitely and suspended all interscholastic athletics from 11:59 PM Friday (March 13th) through Monday April 6th. The NCHSAA Board of Directors will assess the situation regularly over the next few weeks. The suspension included all workouts, skill development, practices and contests.

Catawba County Schools were already scheduled to have an optional Teacher Workday on Monday.  Other school systems will now do the same. The Lincoln County Board of Education will hold an emergency meeting at 8 AM Monday.  School administration will hold a conference call Sunday afternoon and more info will be provided afterward.  The Catawba County Board of Education will hold a special called meeting Monday at 5:30.

Gaston College announced Friday that its Spring Break will be extended through Tuesday (March 17th). At this time, curriculum students should prepare to report to campus for their classes as regularly scheduled on Wednesday (March 18th). Continuing education and small business students should continue to report to classes as currently scheduled. Faculty are to report to the Dallas campus on Monday (March 16th) at 9 AM.

Area hospitals have announced visitation restrictions. Atrium Health announced Wednesday that only immediate family members, aged 13 and over, will be able to take part in hospital visiting hours unless deemed absolutely necessary by the patient’s healthcare team. CaroMont Medical Center in Gastonia announced similar restrictions.

Area nursing homes have instituted visitation restrictions including (in most cases) not allowing any visitation including families of residents.  Before going to visit a friend or relative, check with the facility where they are a patient before going to visit.

Catawba County Senior Nutrition Services is  closing all Catawba County Seniors Morning Out (SMO) sites effective Monday (March 16th). The March 17th gospel concert featuring Billy Ramseur has been cancelled. During this time, all SMO participants will still have the ability to receive meals and will receive daily phone calls from Senior Nutrition Services staff. Senior Nutrition Services is evaluating the situation daily and will make the decision to reopen sites when it is appropriate to do so.

The annual Heafner/Williams Vocal Competition has been cancelled.  The finals would have been March 29th.  

Denver Nuggets Basketball will postpone tryouts until Monday, March 30th from 6:30-8:00 PM at East Lincoln High School.

The Catawba County Chamber of Commerce has decided to postpone or cancel all large gatherings until April 30th. That includes the First Friday Morning Brew which had been scheduled for April 3rd and Future of Catawba County Summit on April 7th.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) has cancelled the Charlotte National College Fair originally scheduled for March 22nd at the Park Expo and Conference Center.

The sixth annual West vs Midwest 1A All-Star Basketball Games and Banquet that had been scheduled for next Saturday (March 21st) at Cherokee High School, Cherokee, North Carolina, has been postponed.  The event, which would have included some players from our area, may be rescheduled later.

Athletes who are a part of Special Olympics North Carolina won't be playing in the spring games due to cancellations because of the coronavirus. This includes Lincoln & all other counties.  The Lincoln County Spring Games had been scheduled forr April.  All other Special Olympics activities have been suspended until at least the end of March.  That includes the Cheerleading Tournament, volleyball clinic at Belmont Abbey, and Unified Rivalry Basketball Game, all of which had been scheduled for next Saturday (March 21st). The summer games for Special Olympics are at this point still scheduled for May 29-31 in Raleigh.

The Catawba County Republican Party Convention has been cancelled. The convention was going to be held Saturday (March 14th) but it has now been cancelled.

The Hickory Aviation Museum (3101 9th Ave. Dr. NW, Hickory) will be open as usual, Tuesday-Sunday at regular hours. The P-3C Orion will be closed to ALL visitors until further notice. No more then five visitors will be allowed inside the Museum Gift Shop at a time and all tour groups are now cancelled. Access to the tarmac will still be allowed in small groups. Museum staff will be disinfecting the museum space daily and hand sanitizer will be available. If any of visitors are exhibiting signs of being sick, please delay your visit until you feel well.

The Cleveland County Heart Association's Go Read for Women luncheon has been postponed until May 27th.

Civitas has announced that it will postpone its Conservative Leadership Conference which had been scheduled for April 17-18.

The Stanley High School multi-class reunion that was set for March 28th at Common Ground in Stanley has been postponed until a later date.

Beginning Saturday (March 14th) Publix said it will adjust store and pharmacy hours companywide to close at 8 PM nightly until further notice, to give time to conduct additional preventive sanitation and restock product on shelves.

Harris Teeter made a similar announcement: To focus on cleaning, replenishment, and the well-being of our associates, we will close our stores at 9 PM each night, effective Sunday, March 15th, until further notice. Your Harris Teeter will continue to open at its regular scheduled time.

Walmart made an announcement Saturday night saying that as of Sunday March 15th, 24-hour stores would switch to 6 AM - 11 PM until further notice.

Bi-Lo announced Sunday afternoon that beginning Monday March 16th,  all its locations will close at 9 PM nightly until further notice. 

The Don Gibson Theatre in Shelby will reschedule all performances that had been scheduled through April 13th.  Check their website for more information.

Governor Cooper's ban on gatherings of over 100 people will also affect church services next weekend.  For this weekend, some churches cancelled services; others did not. The Governor suggested that many churches already have the capability of making their worship services available online.  The Lincoln Herald will be glad to list church service cancellations and if you have a website or Facebook page or your services can be seen on YouTube, send us the link and we'll include it as well.  Email all cancellation & postponement announcements to lh@lincolnherald.com or you can SMS text them to 704-276-6587.

CHURCH CANCELLATIONS, POSTPONEMENTS, related annoucements:

Most United Methodist churches in our area will not have Sunday services this weekend and next.  Bishop Paul Leeland has asked United Methodist congregations to suspend large gatherings and public worship through March 22nd. Here is a link to Bishop Leland's letter CLICK HERE.We have posted some specific churches announcements when provided. 

Messiah United Methodist Church (Hwy. 27 West, Vale) has postponed its Jubilee celebration that had been planned for Sunday.  A new date will be announced once the current coronavirus calamity has ended.  The church will also not have any gatherings on Sunday.  The pastor will deliver his sermon on the church's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/MessiahUMC/).

Iron Station and High Shoals United Methodist Churches will not hold services or activities through March 22nd.

First United Methodist Church (E. Main St., Lincolnton) will not have a Sunday morning worship service this Sunday (March 15th). A determination about March 22nd will be made next week.

The Wednesday Lenten Services (multiple churches) at First UMC, Lincolnton, have also been cancelled.

Webbs Chapel United Methodist Church (Denver) will not be gathering for worship this Sunday (March 15th). Rev. Yeager will be streaming a brief service on the church's Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/WebbsUMCDenver/, Sunday at 9 AM.  The youth BBQ Lunch and Bake Sale will be rescheduled for a later date.

Crouse and Pleasant Grove United Methodist Churches will not have services through March 22nd.  Laboratory United Methodist Church was planning to host a community Lenten Evening Worship and Fellowship this Sunday (March 15th) but they have decided to cancel that event as well.

McKendree United Methodist Church will not hold services through March 22nd. The Third Sunday Luncheon (March 15th) has been cancelled.

Marvin United Methodist Church will not hold any services through March 22nd. Their Saturday morning breakfast (March 15th) was cancelled. They will have worship on Sunday at 10:30 AM through their Facebook Live https://www.facebook.com/MarvinUnitedMethodistChurch/. Check out their Facebook for online Sunday School options and a round-robin phone connection.

First Baptist Church of Cherryville will not have services Sunday.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church (S. Aspen St., Lincolnton) is suspending Sunday morning worship services for the rest of March. The church will be streaming a Sunday worship program on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjWWe5HKbHg&fbclid=IwAR3XBjTq5pN0pyEPFQ9euIN-KKuGIfrGMFwGmHL5hZ2jtdcND6u9IOkz5Gk) and on the church's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/LifeWithEmmanuel/.

First Baptist Church (Lincolnton) has cancelled its Spring Cleanup that had been scheduled for Saturday (March 14th).  The church has also announced a cancellation of all church activities on Sunday (March 15th); Wednesday (March 18th); and Thursday (March 19th). The deacons will revisit the situation weekly to reassess and decide what steps are needed to protect our church members. Dr. Spence will communicate his sermon on-line this Sunday and it can be accessed it through the church website: www.fbclincolnton.org.

Northbrook Baptist Church will have services Sunday, but asks that anyone who is concerned about the coronavirus, especially those in poor health and the elderly, who may want to stay home for safety do so.  You can watch the service at www.northbrookbaptistchurch.com; simply click on the “Watch Live” tab.

Boger City Baptist Church will have all services as regularly scheduled Sunday (March 15th).

Covenant Church (Gastonia Highway) will not have in-person worship services this Sunday (March 15th).  Instead, they invite members and the public to watch Covenant Church Live starting at 10 AM at http://covenantchurch.church/Live/.

Unity Presbyterian Church (Denver) has cancelled all events on the Unity campus through March 28th. The church will offer a live stream the 9:30 AM service on Sundays March 15th & March 22nd at https://mailchi.mp/3…/an-important-message-from-pastor-david.

Alexis Baptist Church will have only its morning worship service (10:15 AM) this Sunday. There will be no Sunday School or evening activities. They will still have nursery and children's church during the service.

Depot Church (Stanley) will hold Sunday service as usual (10:30 AM) at Kiser School.  

Freedom Church (E. Main St., Lincolnton) will not physically gather for Sunday School, corporate worship, or D-Groups beginning this Sunday. Instead, they will be live streaming their worship service on the internet on Freedom Church's Facebook PageYoutube Channel, and Boxcast at 10:15 AM Sunday.

Dallas Baptist Church will not have services this Sunday.  The Lenten gathering that had been scheduled for Dallas Baptist on Wednesday (March 18th) has been cancelled.  A decision on whether or not to hold the other Dallas area churches Wednesday Lenten events will be made this week.

First United Methodist Church of Dallas will follow the bishop's recommendation and hold no services this Sunday or March 22nd.
