LINCOLNTON, N.C.––Admit it.

And there’s no need to be a big, fat liar about it. The year is more than half gone now, and you’re struggling with those new year’s weight-loss resolutions. Maybe you made a good start. Maybe you went on the ever-popular and highly effective Atkins diet, and you lost 50 pounds by the end of spring. Maybe you chose the South Beach diet, also popular, or perhaps you found success with Nutri-System.

But now, perhaps you find yourself struggling. Well, take heart. You’re not alone. According to spokeswoman Jessica Touzet of Florida-based Diet Spotlight, the average Lincoln County resident is almost 50 pounds overweight. Citing the latest statistics, Touzet recently told The Herald how our county is faring in the nationwide obesity epidemic.

“As a matter of fact,” she said, “Lincoln County is fighting just as hard as the rest of the world. The average number of pounds that county residents need to lose is 46. Now that’s 23 percent lower than the state average of 60 pounds and 22 percent lower than the country average of 59 pounds.”

She continued that Diet Spotlight has spent years voluntarily and anonymously collecting body measurements, ages and locations of those who need to lose weight. Touzet added that the company makes use of the latest research efforts by dieticians, nutritionists, physicians and other such medical experts. The company’s Website features healthy diets programs, nutritional information, helpful tips and more.

“With the data in hand,” Touzet said, “researchers are able to narrow down the results to give local men and women the opportunity to see what obesity looks like in their community. Based on the data collected, the average man in Lincoln County weighs 201 pounds and the average woman weighs 180 pounds. The body mass index for each group is 29.2 and 31.4, respectively. This means the county is not as overweight as some counties in North Carolina. But that obesity still touches the men and women living around you.”
