DALLAS -Dr. John Hauser has been named as Gaston College’s new president.

That’s the word Thursday from college spokeswoman Stephanie Michael Pickett. Hauser is the school’s seventh president in its 55-year history. He’ll assume the helm June 1, succeeding longtime president Dr. Patricia Skinner.

Pickett added that the members of the Gaston College Board of Trustees were pleased to announce Hauser’s selection. Chairman Brad Overcash spoke on the board’s behalf, expressing pleasure with the choice.

“The board of trustees is confident that Dr. Hauser is the right person to lead our college,” said Overcash. “He is a dynamic leader with the experience and the drive to help our college succeed.”

Overcash continued that he and his fellow board members feel certain Hauser will be an excellent partner with Gaston College’s faculty, staffers and students to continue to develop the school’s available educational opportunities.

“Dr. Hauser will help lead our college as we support the citizens of Gaston County, Lincoln County and the great state of North Carolina,” he added.

A 15-member committee conducted the initial search for a new president. The committee was comprised of members from the board of trustees, the college’s faculty and staffers, the Gaston College Foundation, the student government association and community members from Gaston and Lincoln counties. Following a rigorous evaluation and selection process that included a series of interviews between December and March, the full trustees board completed the search process, and Hauser emerged as the top choice.

Currently the president of Carteret Community College, Hauser will bring with him more than 30 years of leadership and administrative experience in the North Carolina Community College System. Prior to his appointment at Carteret, he spent more than 20 years at Wilkes Community College in a variety of leadership roles. He has served in many positions, including as director of industry services; dean of industrial, engineering and customized industry training; and dean of the advanced industrial and health technologies division.

In addition to these roles, Hauser also has many years of classroom experience as an adjunct professor and instructor at Appalachian State University and Surry Community College. He has an associate’s degree in applied science in drafting and design technology from Surry Community College. He later earned a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering technology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a master’s degree in education in training and development at North Carolina State University. He earned a doctorate in educational leadership at Appalachian State University.

He is a Phi Theta Kappa Paragon president, and he holds numerous leadership certifications from NCSU, UNC and the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Institute.
