LINCOLNTON - After being postponed one week due to the cold weather school delays the 2014 Spelling Bee was held Tuesday morning, Jan. 14 in the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church in Lincolnton. Lasting for only six rounds the championship word was “amnesia” and the winner was Mauricio Lozano of Lincolnton Middle School. Runner up was Michelle Medina, daughter of Aapito and Sara Medina, of North Lincoln Middle.

Mauricio Lozano, son of Guido and Cristina Lozano, will participate in the 60th Charlotte Observer Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 24 in Charlotte at ImaginOn where the competition will get underway at 10 a.m.

Each participant in the 2014 Lincoln County Public Schools Spelling Bee was given a certificate and a dictionary.

The students who won at their individual school participating in the Spelling Bee were:

Linda Belle Baker – Catawba Springs Elementary
Caroline Dalton – Iron Station Elementary
Zachary Prorock – Love Memorial Elementary
Judd Harrelson – Norris S. Childers Elementary
Caroline Bingham – North Brook Elementary
Samuel Holdsclaw – Rock Springs Elementary
Jenna Shanabarger – St. James Elementary
Addison Stamey – Union Elementary
Ashlyn Lingerfelt – F.D. Jack Kiser Intermediate
Carl Pittenger – Pumpkin Center Intermediate
Paden Rowe – East Lincoln Middle
Mauricio Lozano – Lincolnton Middle
Michelle Medina – North Lincoln Middle
Isabella Shutt – West Lincoln Middle

Judges for the bee were:

Dr. Sandra Andrews – Director of Instructional Technology/Media Services for Lincoln County Schools
Belinda Branson – Lincoln County Schools
Billy Marsh – Executive Director Lincoln County Communities In Schools

Parents, grandparents, teachers and friends were welcomed to the Spelling Bee by Lincoln County School Superintendent Dr. Sherry Hoyle. Dr. Elaine Boysworth, Assistant Superintendent reviewed the rules for the judges and students. The word pronouncer for the bee was Dr. Jennifer Sackett, Director of the Lincoln County Public Library.
