A new program is facilitating transfers from Gaston College to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. UNCC and Gaston College recently signed a joint agreement that will boost transfers and increase academic preparation.

According to Gaston College spokeswoman Stephanie Michael Pickett, the school and Gardner-Webb University in nearby Boiling Springs are now offering a program called “the Bulldog Way,” a $3,000 annual grant.

Burgin Develops Research Skills To Succeed In Medical School
Grace Burgin, 22, enrolled in Gardner-Webb University as a nursing student, but after studying fetal development and receiving encouragement from her professors and friends, she changed her major. The junior from Iron Station decided to pursue a degree in biology with a concentration in biomedical sciences. Her goal is to become an obstetrician/gynecologist.

School Board Hears Complaints
Most of Tuesday evening's meeting of the Lincoln County Board of Education was routine business, but the board did hear complaints from three parents about their decision to implement Plan A--face-to-face instruction--for grades K-5 which began Tuesday.

Here Comes Plan A
Lincoln County Schools, like Lincoln Charter, will be going back to face-to-face in-school learning for grades K-5 next month.  The decision was made at a special called meeting of the School Board Thursday morning (Sept. 24th).

Schools can begin operating under Plan A for grades K-5 effective October 5th according to a revision of his executive order by Governor Roy Cooper last week.  At least one area school system has already said it won't change to that plan; others will discuss it in upcoming meetings.

Union County EMS Gives Gaston College Ambulance
Gaston College’s EMS program is benefiting from the donation of an ambulance from Union County EMS. The Monroe-based agency is affiliated with Atrium Health. The retired vehicle will be used to train students in the emergency medical science program. The ambulance arrived Thursday.

Gaston County Schools has announced its “Of the Year” award recipients for the 2020-2021 academic year. The Zoom video conferencing platform was used to inform the finalists of the winner in each “Of the Year” category: Teacher, New Teacher, Teacher Assistant, Principal, Assistant Principal, and Central Office Administrator.
