SAN FRANCISCO––Markus Beam has come a long way from Vale.

Many readers will recall Beam and his stand-out performance at the Heafner-Williams Vocal Competition at the Lincoln Cultural Center, some years ago. And now the prestigious San Francisco Opera Center has tapped the noted and dynamic baritone to be its general manager, a newly created post, effective in January, according to Opera News this week.

According to San Francisco Opera General Director Matthew Shilvock, Beam will be working with new artistic director Carrie-Ann Matheson.

“Training future generations of artists is one of the most vital and enriching aspects of our artistic work,” said Shilvock, adding, “I am thrilled to welcome Carrie-Ann Matheson and Markus Beam to the San Francisco Opera in an exciting new structure that will support young artists at an unparalleled level. Carrie-Ann and Markus’s leadership will inspire generations of young artists, preparing them for careers on the world’s greatest stages.”

Beam said he was up to the challenge.

“I am thrilled to return to the company in this new role,” he said. “The SFOC tradition of providing excellent training with industry leaders will continue, and Carrie-Ann and I look forward to expanding opportunities for young artists to develop essential skills for an operatic career, while building and developing professional relationships that can function as a support system in their careers beyond SFOC.”

SFOC Managing Artistic Director Gregory Henkel was also enthused.

“Carrie-Ann and Markus’s joyous and caring collegiality are a treasure,” said Henkel. “I admire their deep knowledge of the art form, formidable talents and exceptional experience, which offer unique insight and ability to nurture and launch the next generation of great artists. Together they combine internationally sought-after musical training and top-tier artistic management with both serious rigor and sensitive compassion.”

Beam is currently a vice-president and artist manager in the vocal division of IMG Artists. He began his musical journey some 20 years ago. He established himself as a baritone in Europe, appearing in performances at the German Opera Berlin, the Theatre St. Gallen and countless other venues. He has appeared in America with the Santa Fe Opera and at the Caramoor Festival, as well as with the San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Houston Grand Opera and many more.
