STANLEY––It’s all about honoring those who serve our country.

It’s Veterans Day, of course, and it’s coming up Nov. 11. That date also marks the end of fighting in World War I, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Locally and elsewhere, many will mark the occasion earlier. In Stanley, the Veterans Day celebration will be held Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. at Stanley Pentecostal Holiness Church, located at 113 E. Parkwood St. in downtown Stanley. This is the second such annual event for its co-sponsors: Stanley Pentecostal and the Stanley Cemetery Ancestry Fund (or SCAF), according to Bob Mahovsky. A member of Christ’s Lutheran Church, which is adjacent the cemetery, Mahovsky is the SCAF’s president.

Thursday, he told The Herald more about the upcoming event. The keynote speaker will be Col. Jerry Baird of the North Carolina National Guard (see related article, only here in The Herald).

“No reservations are needed,” said Mahovsky. “But come early to be sure you get a seat. The audience will be entertained with a host of great speakers providing important information, patriotic music and an inspiring keynote speaker. Each family attending will receive a commemorative program guide that includes the names of veterans being honored or remembered for their service to our country and other helpful information. Veterans in attendance will each receive a memento.”

And speaking of veterans, the Stanley Cemetery is a place of much historical significance. Dating back to the 1810’s, it is the final resting place of 141 military veterans, from the Afghan War all the way back to the American Revolution.

If you’d like to make a tax-deductible contribution to the cemetery fund, to help preserve it for future generations, send your checks to:
