The West Lincoln Rebel Navy Junior ROTC program held its annual review Wednesday morning. First came inspection in the old West Lincoln High School gym. Then the cadets assembled at Leonhardt Stadium for a pass-in-review presentation watched by dignitaries including NC State Representative Jason Saine, Lincolnton Mayor John Gilleland, Superintendent Dr. Sherry Hoyle and others.
Program instructor Lt. Cmdr. Ross Maggard watched with pride as the cadets participated in a short drill presentation and a pass-in-review ceremony. The WLHS Rebels marching band and color guard also took part.
Now in his sixth year guiding West Lincoln’s JROTC, Maggard said the program helps build tomorrow’s leaders. "They won't all go into the Navy or Marine Corps," he said, "in fact we have several who are interested in the Air Force and others will find other careers, but we believe their participation in this program will make them better at whatever they choose to do as adults."
The following cadets were recognized for their exemplary personal appearance during the morning’s personnel inspection: Cadets Elisha Cape-Kiser, Arleigh Conard, Samantha Duncan, Noah Fox, Zack Isenhour, Peyton Leatherman, and Jacob Richardson.
A highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement to cadet LCDR Rebecca Hoyle, Company Commander. This special honor is presented to only 22 cadets in the NJROTC programs’ 90,000 cadets.
Following the pass-in-review was a command brief presented by Company Commander Hoyle and her staff to Commander Jones, Dr. Hoyle, Mr. Worley, Mr. Clary and Guidance Director Mrs. Amy Cable.
The West Lincoln program is one of two Junior ROTC programs in Lincoln County. It is associated with the Navy, while the Lincolnton High School JROTC is associated with the Air Force.
The West Lincoln Rebel Navy has been named a distinguished unit for Area 6 for the past three years in a row.
