Details are sketchy pending a release of information expected Tuesday (April 20th) from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, but we do know that a woman died in a fire just off Wilma Sigmon Road in Lincolnton Monday evening.
Assistant Boger City Fire Chief Joe Fletcher told the Lincoln Herald Monday night that Boger City, Lincolnton and North 321 firefighters were dispatched to an assisted living apartment at 963 Bailey Springs Drive about 7:30 Monday evening. When they arrived, they found smoke coming from the front of the building.
Inside, they found a small fire in the front portion of the residence. The fire was extinguished quickly, but the body of the victim was also found in the residence. No identity was available Monday night.
Deputy Fire Marshal Rodney Emmett was also on the scene and Fletcher said he and Lt. Tim Johnson of the Sheriff's Office will release any other information about the fire and the victim. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
Unconfirmed reports indicated the woman's age as 65 and that she used oxygen. It was said that she may have been smoking in bed, but Fletcher said he could not confirm that pending the Fire Marshal's investigation.
