LINCOLNTON, N.C. – A Lincoln County Schools elementary school principal was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge today (December 4, 2018) in connection with an incident that occurred on November 27, 2018 at Union Elementary School.

On November 30, 2018 the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a student at Union Elementary had been assaulted by the principal. During the investigation detectives learned that while addressing behavioral concerns with the student in the principal’s office the student fled the office into the hallway. At that point the principal grabbed the student by the back of the shirt collar causing the student to fall on the floor. The student was then dragged back into the principal’s office doorway.

Patrick Mitchell Nelson, 43, of 3rd Street, NE, Hickory, NC is charged with one misdemeanor count of assault on a child under 12 years old. He was taken before a Lincoln County magistrate today (December 4, 2018) and given a $500 unsecured bond.
