LINCOLNTON, N.C. – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Lake Patrol Unit joined 12 other agencies in the 2019 Public Safety Boat Class hosted by the Cornelius Fire Department.
The training class, conducted on April 26-27 began with a classroom portion which included discussion on various incidents that occurred on Lake Norman in 2018. Then on Friday afternoon (April 26) and all day Saturday (April 27) deputies went through several courses that were set up at different locations utilizing various types of navigational tools.
There were also several different scenarios including a simulated boat fire, boarding a boat to rescue injured victims and people that had went overboard. The goal of the training class is to open lines of communication between the numerous fire, law enforcement, and rescue agencies working on Lake Norman. A total of 55 people attended the weekend class.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Jordan Cody oversees the Lake Patrol Unit and following the class said, “It was a great training and networking opportunity with all the different agencies. It’s good to know about all the resources available and to see a familiar face you have trained with in the event of an emergency on the water.”
Lt. Cody advised there will also be an increased presence on Lake Norman in 2019 than in year’s past. School Resource Officers will be utilized to help handle the Lake Patrol operations this season while they are out of school for the summer.
