Weather may have been a factor in the death of a Cherryville man killed in a wreck on Interstate 85 near Exit 14 (Bessemer City Road) over the weekend.
Deric Durell Clayton, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene after he drove into oncoming traffic and was struck by a truck that was pulling a horse trailer. The accident happened just before 4 PM Saturday (May 11th).
Clayton was apparently attempting to merge into traffic in the northbound lanes of I-85 after turning off Bessemer City Road. Police say it is uncertain why he left the ramp and crossed a median into traffic.
His Honda Accord was struck in the driver’s side by a Ford F-250 towing a horse trailer.
The driver of the truck wasn't injured and her horse suffered only minor cuts.
Police said neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the wreck. While it is uncertain that it played a part, the weather at the time was a severe thunderstorm with a heavy downpour of rain. Police say their investigation is continuing.
