Monday morning (July 1st) a Gaston County resident received a call from a man claiming to be with the Gaston County Police Department. The caller told the resident that he was in contempt of court for failing to appear for Jury Duty. The caller threatened to send police to the resident's home to arrest him if he did not agree to pay a fine over the phone. The resident said that the caller sounded very official.
This is obviously NOT the correct legal process to serve a failure to appear. This is a SCAM!
The Gaston County Police Department does not take or demand payment over the telephone. No law enforcement agency will contact a resident via the phone demanding payment. Residents are reminded never to give financial information over the phone unless you can verify the legitimacy of the caller.
Should you receive any call that the caller says is from a police agency (any) insist on getting a phone number; then let police know at one of their official published numbers so they can catch these scam artists.
