NEWTON, N.C. - As the result of a traffic stop and a follow up investigation by a Deputy assigned to the Road Patrol Division $15,250 worth of stolen equipment was recovered and returned its rightful owners.
On July 3, 2019 at approximately 9:15 a.m. a Catawba County Deputy stopped a vehicle on Old Shelby Road for a traffic violation. During the stop, the Deputy observed several chain saws and leaf blowers in the subject’s vehicle.
During his investigation, the deputy was able to detect that the subject operating the vehicle had outstanding warrants out of Hickory, and the property in his vehicle was stolen.
The following property was recovered on scene:
- 3 Stihl Leaf Blowers total value - $1,650
- 4 Stihl Chainsaws total value - $2,600
The property was determined to be stolen from Mimosa Hills Golf Course in Burke County. During a follow up investigation, Deputies also recovered a stolen wood chipper valued at $9,000 stolen from Morganton, N.C., and a Utility Trailer valued at $2,000 that was stolen from Conover.
Sheriff Brown commented: “I’m pleased this deputy worked to follow up on what he felt was suspicious. He could have handled the traffic violation and went on his way. Instead, he worked to investigate, and in the end, was able to return people’s property to them, and arrest the suspect.”
The suspect was identified as Justin Dennis Lynch, 25, of 4538 Highway 16, North Conover, NC.
Lynch was charged with Possession of Stolen Property, No Operators License, Exceeding Posted Speed, and was served with outstanding warrants for Felony Larceny. More charges are pending.
