8/17/2020 1:16:00 PM Deaths Of Two Men Under Investigation From Catawba St. Fire

LINCOLNTON, N.C. - On Sunday August 16, 2020 at approximately 12:28 p.m. Lincolnton Police Officers responded to the 800 Block of East Catawba Street. The call was in reference to a male subject reporting his son had assaulted him and was threatening to kill him.
Once Lincolnton Police Officers arrived on the scene the subject requesting help was identified as Andrew Doremus, age 54, of 709 East Catawba Street, Lincolnton. Andrew Doremus told Lincolnton Police Officers his son Michael Doremus, age 24, also of 709 East Catawba Street, had assaulted him with a wooden object and held a machete to his throat threatening to kill him.
Lincolnton Police Officers at this time went to 709 East Catawba Street attempting to locate Michael Doremus. Lincolnton Police Officers found the front door of the residence open and the inside of the residence was engulfed with flames and smoke.
Lincolnton Fire Department extinguished the fire at 709 East Catawba Street and found Brandon Lee Thomas, age 20, of Lincolnton, inside residence along with Michael Doremus. Michael Doremus was pronounced dead at the scene.
Brandon Lee Thomas was air lifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem and later passed away as a result of injuries from the fire.
Lincolnton Police Department, Lincolnton Fire Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the cause of the fire.
