Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – Two people were arrested Saturday night (August 15, 2020) shortly before midnight when they were spotted leaving the parking lot of the Walmart at 7131 NC 73 Highway in Denver at a high rate of speed.

A North Carolina state trooper was in the areas and observed the vehicle speeding out of the parking lot. He pursued the vehicle and stopped it near the intersection of NC Hwy 16 and Optimist Club Road. A Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy responded to assist with the traffic stop. The state trooper noticed the back seat of the vehicle contained a number of used vehicle batteries. Officers removed 43 batteries from the vehicle.

The deputy went to the Walmart store and employees advised that a chain had been cut off a fence with bolt cutters and the used batteries stolen. The batteries were recovered and a Walmart employee returned them to the store. The suspects admitted to cutting the chain and loading the batteries in their vehicle.

Mason Storm Meeks, 28, and Demitri James Barfield, 27, both of Bessemer City, NC were charged with one felony count of breaking and entering, and one misdemeanor count each of conspiring to break and enter, larceny and possession of stolen goods. Both men were taken before a Lincoln County magistrate and placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $30,000 secured bond each.
