Around 12:15 p.m. officers had responded to a physical domestic disturbance at 2590 Gaston Webb’s Chapel Road and after clearing the call they learned that a male subject involved in the domestic had four outstanding warrants.

Deputies returned to the location to serve the warrants and the male suspect retreated into a block building on the property. He began firing a shotgun striking two officers and deputies returned fire killing the suspect. Deputy W. Spurling was struck in the face by shotgun pellets. He was transported to Atrium Health - Main in Charlotte where he was treated for his injuries. He was released from the hospital last night. Deputy B. Alexander was struck by a pellet in the arm and was treated and released from Atrium Health - Lincoln.

Under Sheriff's Office policy several officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation. Lincoln County Sheriff Bill Beam said, “This shooting of my officers and Mr. Cutler is a tragedy for my officers, the community, Mr. Cutler and his family. We appreciate the community prayers for our officers and the Cutler family.”
