Counterfeit Currency, Firearm Siezed

Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – On September 16, 2020 while on routine patrol Deputy W. Spurling observed a vehicle on Highway 27 west of Lincolnton was not displaying a visible North Carolina license plate.

The officer initiated a traffic stop in the 4400 block of West NC Highway 27. The driver of the vehicle, Anthony Upton stated he bought the vehicle about two months ago but had not registered it in his name. A passenger in the vehicle, Dennis Roger Vandyke, 57, of Bostic, NC, provided his license which are currently revoked. Deputy Spurling verified the vehicle was not stolen and advised Upton what he needed to do to get the vehicle registered.

Deputies asked the occupants to step out of the vehicle and officers received permission to search each individual and the vehicle. A search of Vandyke turned up a loaded 38 caliber pistol and a glass methamphetamine pipe in his pocket.

Deputies continued to search the vehicle and located a suitcase in the rear seat on the passenger side. Inside the luggage officers located a Canon printer and a folder on top of the printer. The printer was being used to make counterfeit currency and had a partial copy still in the machine. A search of Vandyke’s billfold turned up more counterfeit currency and a bag of methamphetamine. A total of four counterfeit bills were located in the billfold and 71 uncut counterfeit bills in the folders. The items were seized and all items were processed into evidence by Sgt. A. Alvarado and Detective D. Snellings.

Dennis Roger Vandyke was charged with one felony count each of forgery of an instrument, possession of five or more counterfeit instruments, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was also charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of methamphetamine. He was taken before a Lincoln County magistrate and placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $17,000 secured bond.
