Commissioners Amend Addressing Ordinance Requiring Water Front Address Signs

Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, NC – The Lincoln County Commissioners have updated the Addressing and Road Naming Ordinance to require posting of 9-1-1 addresses on the waterfront side of parcels of property located on Lake Norman, as well as on the street side.

The amendment, at its core, is meant to aid our citizens and first responders in a time of emergency. The 12-inch x 18-inch landscape or portrait style sign will be blue in color with reflective lettering and should be placed at a dock or pier readily visible from the lake.

A sign meeting the ordinance’s requirements may be purchase from the county at a cost of $25.00. The fee includes the sign and mounting hardware.

The main objective of such an ordinance is to facilitate the timely location of individual dwellings and businesses by emergency responders when time is of the essence. Being able to readily identify an address will help the first responders and the citizens they serve.

Lincoln County Sheriff Bill Beam told the Lincoln County Commissioners, “What homes look like from the street side is different than what they look like from the water. Because of dead end streets, you have a dock on one street but the next dock over will be on another street. It makes a big difference.” Sheriff Beam went on to say, “The fire departments are on board with this because they are on the water as well. Getting an ambulance to respond quickly to the proper location is important. This is going to be wonderful for that.”

It’s all about safety precautions to better assist first responders in waterside emergencies.
