A 33-year-old woman shot by a Gastonia Police officer early Monday morning died Tuesday afternoon. Shae Estelle Jones was shot by 24-year-old Kevin Solano-Garita after police responded to an overdose call at 12:12 AM at 1215 Mountain Ave. Gastonia Police reports said Jones was armed with a gun.
She was first taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she died shortly after 3 PM Tuesday (Feb. 9th).
The SBI is investigating the incident and the Gastonia Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will conduct a separate but parallel administrative investigation to determine whether department policies and procedures were followed. Solano-Garita has been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure, pending the outcome of the investigations.
