NC Highway Patrol news release:
On Monday, February 15, at approximately 4:20 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal collision in Lincoln County on NC 18 near NC 10. A 2018 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling south on NC 18, crossed the centerline, and collided with a northbound 2016 Freightliner box truck. After impact, both vehicles became engulfed in flames. The driver of the Freightliner, Joshua Goebel, 29, of Conover, was not injured and was able to escape the vehicle. The driver of the Chevrolet was unable to exit and succumbed to injuries at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released and is pending further investigation.
The box truck was hauling tires which burned for an extended amount of time. The initial on-scene investigation indicates alcohol impairment and speeding on the part of the driver of the Chevrolet to be contributing circumstances. The roadway was closed for approximately four hours.
