A mobile home fire claimed the lives of two children Saturday afternoon in Hickory. The Hickory Fire Department responded to the fire call at about 4 PM, but by the time they arrived at the scene on 16th Street SW, the home was already fully involved in flames.
Neighbors called 9-1-1 after saying they heard what may have been an explosion and realized the home was on fire. They said they were hampered in rescue efforts by dogs, but when they got to the door, they couldn't get it open.
The mother of the children, a boy and a girl, was at work. She said she had left the children in the care of her boyfriend, who apparently left them in the home while he went to a store. No adult was present at the home when the firefighters arrived.
There were conflicting reports on the ages of the children Saturday; some neighbors said they were five and six, others said seven and eight.
Firefighters remained on the scene into the evening. No suspected cause of the fire was announced. The SBI is investigating.
