Body Identified
Death was apparently murder

Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office already knew the identity of a man whose body was found Tuesday (July 13th), in a wooded area off Smith Farm Road near US321 in Lincolnton.

Deputies first went to investigate a suspicious vehicle found hidden in the wooded area. Two men who were training a hunting dog had called 9-1-1 when they saw the vehicle in the woods. The car was unoccupied and deputies searched the area in attempt to locate anyone. A Sheriff’s Office K-9 was brought in and quickly located the body. The vehicle was registered to a man who had been reported missing on July 7th, and while the Sheriff’s Office contacted relatives, they did not release his name to the news media until they received the results from an autopsy performed by the medical examiner's office at Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. That information was supplied on Friday (July 16th). Now we can tell you that the body was confirmed to be that of William Buster McCarter, 37. of Lincolnton. Information about the cause of death was not released and other details related to what is now confirmed to be a homicide were also not provided.

We can tell you that McCarter's death apparently occurred near the time that he was reported missing.

If anyone has any information that may help in the investigation, please contact the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at 704-732-9050, the Lincoln County Communications Center at 704-735-8202 or the Lincolnton/Lincoln County CrimeStoppers at 704-736-8909.
