Second Suspect Sought in Drive-by Purse Snatching

On Tuesday (July 26th) officers with the Lincolnton Police Department arrested a Lincolnton man following a robbery investigation.  According to police, the incident took place on Wednesday, July 20th in a parking lot in the 2100 block of East Main Street. Detectives were called to the scene after a female victim reported her purse being forcibly taken from her as she loaded groceries into her vehicle.

Video surveillance showed a vehicle pull next to the woman and a subject reach from the car and grab her purse away from her. Over the course of the following days detectives were able to identify the vehicle and a suspect. On Tuesday (July 26th) detectives obtained a warrant for that suspect’s arrest and patrol officers spotted the vehicle and suspect near the 700 block of East Sycamore Street.  After a traffic stop the suspect, John David Charles II, 18,  was taken into custody without incident.

He was charged with one felony count of Common Law Robbery,  booked into the Lincoln County Jail under a $10,000 bondon that charge, and also served with an outstanding Order for Arrest for failure to appear on an unrelated charge where he received an additional $5000 secured bond.  He was released on bond pending a court appearance.

On Friday (July 29th) detectives filed additional charges for Charles and identified a second suspect in the purse snatching.

James Quavon Herring, 23, of Proctor St., Lincolnton, was charged with one felony count each of Common Law Robbery and Felony Conspiracy.  Herring has not been located and detectives believe he has fled the area.  Herring has been entered as a wanted person into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).  

John David Charles II, 18, Sycamore St., Lincolnton, has now been additionally charged with one count of Felony Conspiracy.  Charles is currently out on bond for the previous arrest. but since the new charge was filed, he has yet to be located. Charles has also been entered into NCIC as a wanted person.
