More Jury Duty Scam Calls This Week In Lincoln County
All you need to do is hang up the phone

Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has received a number of calls from concerned residents about calls they received claiming they failed to appear for jury duty and will be arrested.

The calls are what is known as the jury duty scam and normally targets elderly residents.
The caller this week claims to be a representative of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and an officer will be at the victim’s door in five minutes if they don’t give the suspect identification and credit card numbers. They are also being told to stay on the phone with the caller while they make a trip to an ATM or to purchase gift cards.

The victims of these scams have reported receiving calls from an individual claiming to be a representative of our office. The scammer will typically reference court costs, fees, fines, and warrants. The scammer will request payment under threat of arrest. Victims in these cases have been directed to make payment by several different methods. The payment methods include ATM deposit, gift card purchases and apple pay transfers. The scam calls and call routing systems are convincing and elaborate. In several cases the phone number for the Sheriff's Office has been "Spoofed" by the scammer enabling the direct Sheriff's Office phone number to be displayed on caller ID.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office DOES NOT take payment for any legal system fines or fees. It is important to be safe and cautious when anyone contacts you requesting payment. If you or anyone you know receives one of these calls please contact the Sheriff's Office at 704-732-9050 or 704-735-8202. Do not send any money and do not contact these individuals back. Please make friends and family aware of this scam.

First things first, hang up the phone without providing information or taking any action. You may be pressured to stay on the phone but you should resist and hang up.

In North Carolina, court officials and law enforcement officers never make phone calls to threaten arrest and warn you of an impending arrest for failing to appear for jury duty.

It is a scam and all you need to do is hang up the phone.
