Wayne Howard Staff Writer
The Highway Patrol says 20-year-old Haley Smith of Lincolnton may have been speeding in excess of 100 mph when she was involved in a horrific accident Wednesday afternoon (June 10th). Heading toward Lincolnton, she ran off the right side of the road on US 321 between Hardin and High Shoals, overcorrected, and crossed the median; her Honda Accord flipped, was struck by an SUV in the southbound lanes and split in two.
Firefighter Mike Shrum happened on the accident just after it happened and called for help. He thought given the wreckage he saw that Smith was surely dead. When EMS crews arrived, Smith was unconscious and trapped in the front half of the vehicle. After being extracted, she was rushed to the hospital.
Emergency workers found a pregnancy test on the seat of the car. It had tested positive. The hospital checked Smith out and she had only minor injuries. She--and the baby--would be OK.
Now Smith faces charges of reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia and having unsafe tires--but she's alive, and everyone who saw the wreckage agrees: that is a miracle.
