LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Last week the Rotary Club of Lincolnton – Sunrise kicked off their annual Dictionary Project. The Dictionary Project gives a free dictionary to every third grader in Lincoln County enrolled in the public schools and charter schools.

“This is one of the best projects we do,” said Sunrise Rotary President, Beth Abernethy. “The teachers love the dictionaries because of all the information contained in them. It’s more than just a collection of words and definitions. It has maps of states, countries, and continents. There are photos and a brief biography of every U.S. President. There is a section on the Solar System with pictures of every planet. It’s a very neat book.”

She went on the add that the teachers like the fact that the children can look up whatever they are interested in, plus the fact that third graders learn about maps and the solar system this year.

One of the biggest advantages the dictionaries give is access to things outside the classroom. A large number of children in school don’t have access to the internet or even a computer at home.  “The dictionaries help them learn, and have fun.”

One of the most popular parts of the dictionary with the students is the longest word in the English language. According to Abernethy, “They are stunned when they find that the word takes up an entire page and has over 1900 letters in it. WE get a lot of ‘Oh No’s” when we tell them that the word will be on the next spelling test. Of course we tell them that we are kidding.”

To fund the Dictionary Project, which costs thousands of dollars, the club has been selling raffle tickets each year at the Apple Festival, and has been awarding a matching grant from Rotary International’s Foundation. All the third graders will have their dictionary by the end of October.

President Abernethy said, “It helps the kids. They love it, the teachers love it, and we love it. To me, that makes it a great project.”
