Lincolnton Teen Charged With Financial Card Theft

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – Lincoln County Sheriff’s detectives have charged a Lincolnton teen with attempting to use a debit card that had been reported lost by the owner.
Kaitlyn Clegg of Kannapolis, N.C. reported to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office on November 27, 2018 that someone attempted to use a debit card she reported lost on November 25, 2018. She told officers she lost the wallet containing her debit card, identification and driver’s license while she and her boyfriend were at a park near Pumpkin Center Intermediate School. A search of the area did not locate anything and she reported the lost debit card to her bank.
Later the bank notified her that someone had attempted to use the card at a business on South Laurel Street in Lincolnton, N.C. Security camera footage was obtained and the victim was able to identify a friend of her boyfriend as the suspect. The wallet and important papers were located and returned to the victim.
Detective Kelly Paris secured warrants charging William David Brenes, 18, of Lincolnton, N.C. with one felony count each of financial card theft and attempting to obtain property by false pretense. He was arrested at his residence on November 29, 2018 and taken before a Lincoln County magistrate who set bond at $3,000 secured. He will have a first appearance in Lincoln County District Court on November 30, 2018.
