It was an historic event. The reception in honor of City Councilwoman Mary Frances White was befitting the occasion. An overflow crowd filled the reception hall on the lower level of the Lincoln Cultural Center and the comments portion of the event had to be moved to the Timken Performance Hall on the second floor.
Courtney Shay sang the national anthem and speakers including Lincolnton Mayor Ed Hatley and 10th District Democratic chair Betsy Wells took turns saying how important the election of White was to them. Family members also spoke briefly, and White took her turn to thank those in attendance and her campaign workers who had helped to change history.
Following the reception, the City Council held a special swearing in meeting at which White along with Dr. Jim Watson became new members of the council. White was elected to a four-year term representing Ward I. Watson was elected to fill out an unexpired term representing Ward II. He will serve until 2020. Mayor Ed Hatley and Councilman Dr. Martin Eaddy also took their oaths of office. Eaddy was re-elected to represent Ward III for the next four years. Hatley, who had previously served a two-year term will now serve four years since the election laws changed last year to make the mayor's term four years instead of two.
The regular monthly meeting of the Council was held after the special meeting. Appointments to various boards and two public hearings--one on a request for incentive funding for building improvements for a downtown business and the other for a conditional use permit for a new car wash at Ingles were the major part of the abbreviated agenda.
