LINCOLNTON, N.C.––The recent DECA District Competition was a big hit with local high school students.
That’s the word Friday from business and marketing teacher Clint Spencer of West Lincoln High. Also the school’s DECA adviser, Spencer said students from Lincolnton, West, East and North Lincoln high schools took part in the event, which also drew in students from Gaston, Cleveland and Watauga counties.
Formerly the Distributive Education Clubs of America, the DECA is a not-for-profit career and technical student organization with more than 215,000 members in all 50 states and several foreign countries.
As Spencer explained, the DECA “is a national organization that prepares high school and college students to be leaders and entrepreneurs in the areas of marketing, finance, hospitality and management. In order to be a member, the student must also be taking a marketing or business course. There are also state and national competitions held throughout the year.
“Prior to attending the district competition,” he added, “the students must first take a 100-question written test at their school. There are four different areas of competition: apparel and accessories (retail), sports and marketing (entertainment), quick-service restaurant management and the principles of marketing. At the competition, the students take part in a role-play scenario, wherein they’re presented with a problem and are given 10 minutes to prepare a response, which they do in front of a judge. We recognize students who placed in the top 10 of their event with a medal, and those who place in the top three receive a trophy.”
