LINCOLNTON, N.C.––Maintaining the tax base and reorganizing City employees’ duties were among the year’s big accomplishments.

That’s the word Thursday from Lincolnton Mayor Ed Hatley. Looking back at the year nearly over, Hatley also looked ahead to 2019.

“We have implemented a pay and class study to ensure that our employees are paid equitably,” the mayor noted. “We have reorganized a lot of our employee responsibilities to better serve our citizens. We have purchased and are in the process of designing our new location for the police department. We have maintained the same tax base this year.”

Hatley also cited Lincolnton’s several new eating and social establishments for residents and visitors. A new Jersey Mike’s submarine sandwich restaurant is slated to open within a week, as he pointed out.

“Our business incentive grants continue to help existing merchants and help recruit new businesses,” said Hatley, looking to ’19 and continuing, with regard to the City of Lincolnton, “We are going to implement an automatic pay review on a rotating basis for our employees. We would like to restart a recycling program for our city. We hope construction will begin on our downtown condo project. We will finish the design and hopefully the renovation of our new police department. And we look forward to welcoming our first brewery in 2019.”

Positioned within relatively easy reach of Charlotte, Lincolnton is possessed of many advantages.

“Our biggest is our people,” the mayor said. “The citizens of Lincolnton are hard-working, diverse and welcoming. Our people are, by far, our greatest asset. We haven’t raised taxes in years. Our people are ready for growth but a controlled growth.

“We want to always improve and be innovative,” Hatley added. “But we don’t want to lose our small-town feeling. Lincolnton is our county seat, and the courthouse has always been the centerpiece of our city. The city council can only hope the county commissioners will join with us in our endeavor to leave the courthouse downtown for all our citizens.”
