Third Case Of Rabies In Gaston County In 2018

GASTONIA, N.C. - On Thursday, December 22 at approximately 8:44 a.m. the Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement Division received a call from 1400 block of Gaither Road Belmont, NC 28120. The resident identified a sick raccoon that was out in their yard during the day acting sick. The sick raccoon was subsequently killed by the residence’s dog after the initial call.

Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident and impounded the raccoon. The raccoon was processed for rabies testing and was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. The official laboratory results were received on December 28, 2018 at 12 p.m. The raccoon tested positive for rabies.

The Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services was notified since the resident and dog live at the residence. The dog that killed the raccoon was current on its rabies vaccination and was seen on December 28 by a local registered North Carolina Veterinarian to receive a booster. No other animal lives at this residence.

Animal Care and Enforcement completed a neighborhood canvass in the area of Gaither Road Belmont to notify the community of the positive rabies result.

The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement unit stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all of your pet’s health and safety as well as the health and safety of their owners and community.

This represents the third confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year.
