Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – A man wanted on outstanding warrants has been apprehended following a vehicle chase that went from western Lincoln County into Cleveland County.

At 2 a.m. on January 7, 2019 Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies observed a vehicle run through a stop sign and take off at a high rate of speed. Deputies recognized the vehicle as a car that James William Canipe III, 25, of Cranberry Trail, Vale, NC would be driving and pursued the vehicle. Emergency equipment was activated and officers pursued the vehicle at speeds in excess of 80 miles an hour.

The chase continued into the town of Casar, NC in Cleveland County. The suspect turned onto several streets and finally a dead end road where the car struck a parked vehicle and wrecked. The suspect jumped from the vehicle and ran into a wooded area. Deputies detained a female passenger and she confirmed the driver was James William Canipe III, who was wanted in Lincoln County on drug charges. The female passenger told officers she pleaded with Canipe to let her out of the vehicle but he told her no and continued to hold her against her will.

Cleveland County was notified and responded with a K-9 unit and set up a perimeter. The K-9 unit quickly located Canipe and officers took him into custody. No one was injured during the incident.

Canipe is charged with one felony count of fleeing to elude arrest, one felony count of 2nd degree kidnapping, one misdemeanor count of false imprisonment, misdemeanor resist, delay and obstruct a public officer, failure to stop for a siren, 4 counts of probation violation, driving while license revoked, hit and run property damage, possession of drug paraphernalia, conspiracy, felony possession of a firearm, common law false imprisonment, careless and reckless driving, and fictitious name or address on license.

He was placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center without the privilege of bond. He has a first appearance set for today in Lincoln County District Court.
