Convenience Store Owner Assaulted, Vehicle Stolen

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – Lincoln County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating an assault and theft at the Corner Market at 1118 Confederate Road, Lincolnton, NC.

A white male and female entered the store around 11:15 a.m. today and asked to use the telephone. While the female was on the telephone, the male came around the counter and assaulted the owner with a knife and his fist. The couple left the store but the male returned and assaulted the woman again with a knife and his fist. The couple then fled in the owner’s 2001 gold in color Honda Odyssey. The vehicle is occupied by the suspect and a female passenger. The North Carolina license plate on the vehicle is WRS1696.

The owner was transported to Atrium-Lincoln then transferred to Atrium-Charlotte for further treatment. She sustained a stab wound to the chest and multiple facial injuries. No money is believed to have been stolen during the incident.

The male suspect in the incident has been identified as Billy Joe Franklin III, 32, of Cherryville, N.C. Warrants have been issued charging Franklin with attempted first degree murder, felony common law robbery, felony larceny of a motor vehicle and felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury. He is also charged with misdemeanor larceny.

Jessica Mae Nations, 27, of Gastonia is also charged with accessory to attempted first degree murder, common law robbery, felony conspiracy, larceny of a motor vehicle, misdemeanor larceny and accessory to assault inflicting serious bodily injury.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Franklin and Nations is asked to contact the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at 704-732-9050, the Lincoln County Communications Center at 704-735-8202 or the nearest law enforcement agency.
