Wayne Howard
Staff Writer

A Cherryville man and a Gastonia woman are in jail now after an incident Wednesday morning west of Lincolnton.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office told us a couple identified as 32-year-old Billy Joe Franklin III of Cherryville and 27-year-old Jessica Mae Nations of Gastonia entered the Corner Market store at the intersection of highway 150 west of Lincolnton and Confederate Road around 11:15 Wednesday morning and asked to use the telephone. While the female was on the telephone, the male came around the counter and assaulted the owner with a knife and his fist. The couple left the store but the male returned and assaulted the woman again with a knife and his fist. The couple then fled in the owner’s 2001  Honda Odyssey.

The owner was transported to Atrium Health-Lincoln, then transferred to Atrium Health-Charlotte for further treatment. She sustained a stab wound to the chest and multiple facial injuries. No money was believed to have been stolen during the incident.

The two were apprehended in the van in Alexander County.

Franklin was charged with attempted first degree murder, felony common law robbery, felony larceny of a motor vehicle and felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury and misdemeanor larceny.

Nations was charged with accessory to attempted first degree murder, common law robbery, felony conspiracy, larceny of a motor vehicle, misdemeanor larceny and accessory to assault inflicting serious bodily injury.

Apprehended early Thursday morning, the couple was taken to jail pending a first appearance in court Thursday.  Franklin is being held under a $1,040,000 secured bond. Nations was jailed under a$520,000 secured bond.

At last report, the victim in the incident was said to be in stable condition.
