A Claremont man for whom an involuntary commitment order was issued by a Catawba County Magistrate on Saturday went on a rampage at a neighbor's house early Sunday and now faces multiple charges.

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office reports that the Catawba County Communications received a 9-1-1 call at 6:35 Sunday morning regarding a breaking and entering in progress at a residence at 4862 Rock Barn Road, Claremont.

The callers reported that a male subject who they believed to be armed had entered their residence. The homeowners locked themselves in their bedroom and called 9-1-1.

Deputies responded along with the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office Special Tactic and Response (START) Team.

While inside the residence, the suspect started a fire in the kitchen. The victims were still inside the home at that time, but were able to escape through a window.

The suspect was ultimately taken into custody.

The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Eric Michael Deal of 4853 Rock Barn Road, Claremont. Deal was charged with two counts of Attempted 1st Degree Murder, one of 1st Degree Burglary, one of 1st Degree Arson and two
counts of 1st Degree Kidnapping.

The victims were identified as Emily Sigmon, 22, Hunter Sigmon, 25, both of 4862 Rock Barn Road, Claremont.
