LINCOLNTON, N.C. - On Monday, February 25 Lincoln County Animal Services received a call about a cat that was found dead in the Verdict Ridge Subdivision, in Denver N.C. after potentially exposing a resident.
The cat was retrieved by Animal Control and processed for rabies testing. On Thursday, February 28 the official test results were received from the NC Laboratory of Public Health and confirmed the cat tested positive for rabies. This is the first positive rabies result in Lincoln County in 2019. Animal Control Officers have been informing residents in the immediate area where the cat was picked up.
Lincoln County Animal Services would like to take this opportunity to remind residents of the following very important and lifesaving things:
- Rabies vaccination for dogs, cats, and ferrets over the age of 4 months is required by law. A current rabies vaccination is lifesaving for pets that are exposed to rabies.
- To keep safe, don’t approach or handle wildlife, or dogs/cats whose rabies vaccination status is unknown. If you see or come into contact with a wild animal that may be sick, or is exhibiting signs of abnormal behavior, or get scratched or bitten by a cat/dog call Animal Services ASAP at (704) 736- 4125, or dial 911 to report it. Reporting these incidents is critical to your health and safety.
- For cats that live out in the community rabies is preventable. If you or anyone in your neighborhood is feeding, caring for, or allowing cats to live in the area, you can protect them and your community by calling (704) 736-4125 for more information on taking advantage of the Community Cat Fix program - where cats will be rabies vaccinated and spayed/neutered for free.
- Animal Services will be holding yearly rabies vaccination clinics in the upcoming months; dates will be listed on the county website at lincolncounty.org/animalservices. One-year rabies vaccinations for cats and dogs are always available for $7 at Lincoln County Animal Services, 650 John Howell Memorial Drive, Lincolnton NC. Please visit Lincoln County Animal Services Monday-Friday, between the hours of 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. to have your pets vaccinated. Alternatively, 1-year and 3-year vaccines are also available through your local veterinarian.
Please call LCAS at 704-736-4125 for more information.
