If nothing happens to change the plan, Lincoln County's Administrative Offices will be moving next week to the new County Administration Building on North Generals Blvd. The building at 353 North Generals Blvd. previously served as the administration building for the Lincoln County Schools.
The Schools moved to the former Battleground School on Jeb Seagle Drive late last year, turning the North Generals Blvd. building over to the County. As a part of the County's plan to make better use of County buildings and provide better services and more convenience to the public, it was decided to move the County Manager's office, Human Resources department, Finance department, Purchasing office, and Commissioners meeting facilities to the North Generals Blvd. location. The move will essentially vacate the third floor of the James W. Warren Citizens Center.
This is only round one of the moves that are planned. The Planning & Inspections departments will be moving to the Citizens Center from their current location at the intersection of North Academy and East Pine streets. The Elections office will be moving to the former R.B. Cronland Garden Center on Salem Church Road. Not related to those moves to and from the Citizens Center will be the move of the Senior Center from the Lincoln Campus of Gaston College on South Academy St. to Town & Country Shopping Center and the Communications Center's move to a new building behind the Health Department on Gamble Drive. The moves are expected to provide space for expansion as needed and should meet the County's needs for a quarter of a century or longer.
Also planned is the move of the Courts from the Lincoln County Courthouse downtown to a new building to be constructed adjacent to the Health Department. Commissioners haven't approved any plans for that move which is still a few years away, but they did decide on that location instead of one on West Water Street.
The Commissioners will hold their last meeting at their current meeting room on the third floor of the Citizens Center next Monday. Their April 1st meeting will be at the new Administration Building.
Other major projects are either already underway or planned--including the new West Lincoln Branch Library on Shoal Road near West Lincoln Middle and High schools. Commissioners approved the plan at their meeting earlier this month to finance that facility over a 15-year period instead of 20 years as originally discussed because paying it off sooner will save money.
The auditorium at the Citizens Center is currently being renovated. New and improved lighting and sound systems are a part of the improvements. The auditorium has been out of service since late last year and the work is expected to be completed by this Spring.
The County and the City have also agreed upon a plan that involves a number of changes including the County turning over the building at the corner of SE Courtsquare and East Water St. (previously used by the Tax Department) to the City. The current Planning & Inspections building will also be vacated and the County will continue to market the former Health Department location on Wilma Sigmon Road at North Generals Blvd. as the move to better structures and out of older buildings continues.
