Investigation Continuing In Accidental Shooting Incident

Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – Lincoln County Sheriff’s detectives are continuing the investigation into an accidental shooting incident that occurred on March 20, 2019 at the Lake Norman Quarry.

The victim, Jerry Lee Burnette, 47, of Marshall, NC was operating a crane at the quarry when he was struck in the leg by a piece of shrapnel. He was able to climb down from the crane and deputies assisted him to the main gate of the facility to be treated by Lincoln County EMS. He was then transported to Atrium Health – Charlotte.

Workers on site said the incident occurred around 7:50 p.m. when the shrapnel glanced off a piece of equipment hitting the victim. The caller advised the Lincoln County Communications Center that it sounded like multiple weapons being fired.

A check of the area turned up a location in the 6800 block of Glover Lane where several individuals had been shooting at targets with semi-automatic weapons. Several people have been interviewed and weapons were seized.

Detectives will take their findings to the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed in the case.
