Wayne Howard
Staff Writer

On Saturday April 14th the Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement Division received a call from the 800 block of Unity Church Road, where a resident reported a dog had killed a raccoon.

The raccoon was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. The official laboratory results were received on Tuesday April 16th. The raccoon tested positive for rabies.

The Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services was notified and the Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists began a canvass of the immediate area where the animal was located to advise residents of the incident and to verify pet rabies vaccinations.

This was the first confirmed rabies cases in Gaston County in 2019.  Lincoln County has had three, Cleveland County has had one, and Catawba County has had three so far this year.

North Carolina law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets four months old or older must be vaccinated against rabies.  Initial vaccinations are good for one year, booster shots then give three years protection.

Rabies is an incurable disease that can affect animals and humans.  Having your animals vaccinated is the best protection for them and your family.

In Gaston County, a FREE rabies shot clinic is scheduled for Saturday April 27th 9 - 11 AM for cats and dogs while the supply of vaccines for the clinic last. Pets must be 16 weeks of age or older.

Gaston County licenses will be sold on site (cash or check only). If your pet is spayed/neutered, the tag is only $10 with proof of spay/neuter status. If your pet is not spayed or neutered, tag are $35 each.

Please bring all dogs on a leash and all cats in a carrier. No feral cats please.

In Cleveland County, a free rabies shot clinic is scheduled for Saturday May 4th 8 AM - 1 PM at Kings Mountain High School, offering free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets. For Cleveland County residents, there is no maximum number of pets you can bring. To receive a three-year rabies shot, you need to bring proof of a current vaccination.

In Catawba County, the Humane Society of Catawba County will offer low-cost rabies clinics the first Saturday of each month through August. One year rabies vaccinations will be available for $8 (normally $10). All dogs must be on a leash and under control of the dog owner at all times, and all cats must be in a carrier. No appointment is necessary. Rabies clinics are available to any member of the public and are not limited to residents of Catawba County. The schedule of clinics is:
