Inmate In Critical Condition After Attempted Suicide

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – A Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center inmate is listed in critical condition after an attempted suicide on Monday, May 13, 2019.

Detention Center officers found Michael Scott Constance, 33, of Lincolnview Road, Lincolnton, NC hanging by a bed sheet attached to the top bunk of his cell. Constance was unresponsive and detention center personnel, Lincoln County EMS, and Boger City firemen performed CPR and were able to regain a pulse.

Constance was rushed to Atrium Health – Lincoln then transferred to Atrium Health in Charlotte where he is listed in critical condition.

Detention Center officers checked the cell block at 5:06 p.m. and reported no problems. When the cell mate returned to the cell at 5:42 p.m. from work duties in the jail he discovered Constance hanging by a bed sheet from the bed and alerted jail personnel. Constance was removed from the sheet and CPR started.

Constance had been in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center since January 17, 2019 after he was arrested on felony child abuse and assault on a child under 12 years of age charges. The arrest came after an investigation into reports that a two-year-old child having severe bruising and other injuries after being brought for treatment at Atrium Health in Lincolnton, NC on January 16, 2019. Constance had remained in jail under a $40,000 secured bond.
