Three of four people on a boat that sank in the Catawba River near Belmont before dawn Monday (May 20th) made it to shore but one, 19-year-old James Coulter from Gastonia, drowned.
The incident happened just off Wilkinson Blvd. near the Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park. Emergency crews, after getting the call at 4:30 AM, made it to the scene to find the three--two men and a woman--making their way to shore.
Belmont Police said the four were part of a group who were camping on an island in the river just north of the Wilkinson Blvd. bridge and using the boat to transport campers from the island back to the shore.
When the boat began taking on water, a call for help was made.
Coulter's body was recovered about 1 PM Monday. His identity has not yet been released.
