Memorial Day

Wayne Howard
Staff Writer

Monday is Memorial Day. A lot of people confuse the day with Veterans Day which happens in November. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all US military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service.

Originally known as Decoration Day because on a certain day, relatives of those who were killed in the Civil War would decorate the graves of their soldiers who died during the war. originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. From 1868 to 1971 it was celebrated on May 30th, but the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved it to the last Monday in May.

The observance begins at the Lincolnton VFW Sunday afternoon a 4 o'clock. A brief ceremony will be followed by the lighting of luminaries in the shape of a cross on the VFW lawn.

Flag etiquette for Memorial Day is to raise the flag to full staff in the morning, then lower it to half staff until noon.

Area schools will be closed Monday. In Lincoln County, Lincolnton City and Lincoln County offices will be closed; Lincolnton will have holiday week trash pickup Tuesday-Thursday; County landfill and convenience sites will be open Monday as usual. All library locations will be closed. The Lincoln County Family YMCA in Lincolnton and Sally's Y at Denver will be open Monday 8 AM - 6 PM.

The Lincoln County Veterans Council will have a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Courtsquare at noon. It will last about 30 minutes. The ceremony will be on the east side of the Courthouse. The lane going around the Courtsquare will be closed at the traffic triangle, but traffic can still travel east and west on Main Street.

In Catawba County, County Offices, libraries, and the Blackburn Construction/Demo Landfill will be closed Monday. The Blackburn Sanitary Landfill, convenience centers and Catawba County Parks will be open.

In Gaston County, County offices will be closed as will the landfill and convenience sites. Gaston County libraries will be closed.
