They got their man. The Catawba County Sheriff's Office had asked for help from the public in finding Justin Drew Dalton, listed as a person of interest in a Wednesday (May 29th) homicide. Just before midnight Thursday, a Catawba County Sheriff’s Deputy observed the vehicle Dalton was suspected of stealing in a parking lot at 2368 Springs Road NE in Hickory. With assistance from Hickory Police, Dalton was arrested after a brief foot chase.

Wednesday morning (May 29th) shortly after 9 AM, Catawba County Communications received a call from a person reporting that a co-worker had not shown up for work. The caller requested that a deputy check on the subject at his residence in the 3000 block of Sigmon Dairy Road in Newton.

Deputies responded to the residence and observed a deceased person inside. Investigators from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office then obtained a search warrant for the residence. The victim was identified as Emden Lee Syres, Jr.

Deputies sought the public’s assistance in locating the 32-year-old Dalton, a person of interest in the case. Warrants were issued for Dalton for Larceny of a Motor Vehicle in connection with the case. Dalton also had warrants for Child Abuse and Driving While License Revoked out of Alexander County.

After he was apprehended, Dalton was questioned and early Friday morning, he was charged with the murder of Syres.
