Johanna Moolenaar of Denver graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy on May 22nd at ceremonies on the grounds of the Academy. She received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree and a Commission as an Ensign in the Coast Guard.
The US Coast Guard Academy is one of the nation’s five service academies. It is located on the west bank of the Thames River in New London, Connecticut. Each year, the Academy graduates about 200 newly commissioned officers to the smallest branch of the US Armed Forces. The Coast Guard is the coastal defense and maritime law enforcement branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the country's seven uniformed services. Perhaps best known to most for its search & rescue missions, the Coast Guard is America's maritime first responder.
Ensign Moolenaar graduated with Honors from East Lincoln High School in 2015. While at East Lincoln she was a four year varsity player for the Mustang basketball team. She was also a member of the tennis, soccer, and track teams. She continued her basketball career at the Coast Guard Academy during her four years there. The Coast Guard Bears are a member of the NCAA Division III Newmac Conference.
Her first assignment will be aboard the USCG Cutter Thetis whose home port is Key West, Florida. She will be an Engineering Officer (in training).
Ensign Moolenaar is the daughter of Edward Moolenaar of Denver and Laura Jo Coker of Mount Holly.
