6/12/2019 5:10:00 PM Motorcyclist Killed On Highway 73
Wayne Howard Staff Writer
Jacob Wayne Chase, 24, was killed when his motorcycle hit a tree that fell across Highway 73 in eastern Lincoln County Wednesday morning (June 12th). The accident happened about 2 AM between Club Drive and Killian Farm Road; that's about 1.3 miles east of the NC16-Business and NC73 Intersection.
The tree also downed power lines when it fell resulting in the loss of electricity to almost 750 Duke Energy customers.
The Department of Transportation cleared the tree from the road. Duke Energy repaired the power lines pulled down by the fallen tree.
The highway was closed until the tree could be removed.
Three men were killed in an accident west of Lincolnton Friday night after their vehicle hydroplaned and ended up in a swollen Rock Dam Creek. While Chase's death wasn't as directly tied to the stormy weather as those were, it's still likely that the fallen tree was a result of the heavy rains over last weekend.
